  1. Hi Scott,

The serial numbers issue seems to be sorted now.

Does TNI ping the IP address of a machine to judge whether it is online or not? Or does it use the hostname or something else for computers that were added via hostname?

This depends on the "Static IP address" flag that you can see and edit on "Edit-Properties" page. Machines with static IP are pinged and scanned by their saved IP address, and for machines without this flag the network name is resolved to IP address first and this IP is used then.

The option "Resolve network names" is only used when scanning by IP addresses and only to show the names in the Scanner window. It does not influence anything else.

Please check if the described issues are related to the static IP flag and let us know.

Is it safe to assume that all the actual scanned information is still accurate due to the fact they rely on the mac address?

Yes, the program relies on MAC, UUID, serial number and asset tag. Even if a network card is changed, there are other 3 parameters (though serial number is only relevant for branded computers and asset tag is not filled most often). So in 99% of cases the same hardware merges into one asset. This even causes problems to some users wanting another hardware under the same network name (as it was in v.1.6, which we tried to avoid now).

  2. Can you please send us a couple of INV files for such computers (support@softinventive.com)? Right-click them and choose "Show in Explorer" to find the files. It seems that more accurate serial number is located in another field than we expected it to (on many Dells we've seen the same number is specified in two different fields - BIOS S/N and chassis S/N, seems to be wrong assumption on our part).

  3. Hi Scott,

Do you see anything similar to the required serial number in "View details - Hardware - System details"?

If not, try the following: scan a computer which serial number you know for sure with the TNI previous version standalone scanner. It will generate an XML file with the scan results in the "Data" subfolder in the current location. Open it in Notepad and try to find the serial number. If you find it, let us know where exactly and send us this file by email. If not, unfortunately it won't be possible to bring up these serials.

  4. Sander,

Exactly. Using table reports you can do many things. And what you can't do there, you can do in Excel by exporting the report to CSV (like highlighting duplicate values, etc).

    Hemo2,

You're welcome 🙂 We have released an update today which contains the "Reset properties" feature. Just select your storage root, go to "Edit - Properties", click "Reset properties", tick the checkbox "Determine device type" and click "Apply". All devices' types will be redetected. This feature is safe for network devices, it will not reset their type to "generic device".

  5. The detection is made only when the first scan is done. Afterwards asset type is not changed by the program. Really, they need to be deleted and rescanned. But in the next update we will add a possibility to redetermine the asset type and virtual type to avoid the need to clear everything and rescan from scratch or setting the properties manually.

  6. I had sent a 'enhancement' request in via the TNI v2 beta for this, but I'm wondering how others might handle this issue. (I also can't believe I just now thought of this! Too busy doing limited testing to run across the problem I guess, but regardless, this issue is staring me full in the face now!)

    Hi Hemo2,

We are still working on this issue, please give us some more time. We need to discuss the possibilities again here.

  7. I can't even get the latest beta to work on several systems...

it fires up, asks me for my storage location and it shuts down...this is happening on my windows XP and Windows 7 systems...

am I missing something, suggestions? previous betas worked.

    Hi Thrashie,

Do you experience the same with the latest update (2.0.1 build 1078)? If so, please send us an email.

  8. Hello support, i have tested the beta, but i have troubles with scanning my domain controllers, and a linux CentOs.

In the image that i attached you can see in first position my domain controller after 15 minutes of scanning, it stays in scanning software status on 65%.

    ...

I have another domain controller that have the same troubles that my first domain controller.

In the TNI application with version 1.6.8, i don't have the troubles with domain controllers, in that version my two domain controllers are scanned in seconds.

This issue was finally fixed in the latest version 2.0.1.

In the second position you can see a linux version: "Linux lcalp-tropos 2.6.9-55.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed May 2 14:28:44 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux", that have troubles to do the scanning.

Do you still have troubles with scanning these Linux systems with the latest version? If so, please send us an email.

  10. - Added 1 Device, Vista SP1, scanned succesfully with agent

    Hello fbrem,

Please send us the file for this computer to support@softinventive.com for analysis (right-click on the computer and select "Show in Explorer" to find the file).

2 ALL: Please do not post bug reports here (that would require us to ask for more information from you), use email for this. Use this topic for discussion of new features, functionality questions, feedbacks and suggestions.

    UPD: Fixed.

  11. ok, here's the deal, I think we are ready to buy TNI, but i do like the beta, is it possible to get full version of beta? because it seems the feature is limited in some way, for example during export, i see bunch of BETA VERSION???

When you copy or export something, some text is randomly replaces with "BETA VERSION". This is the only limitation to prevent production use, because the beta is not limited in any other way. Currently we don't have a full version of beta, but as soon as we have it, you will get it. Besides, if you purchase the current version, you will save some funds, as the prices will rise after the TNI 2.0 release, but registered customers will get a free upgrade.
