  1. Detection of antiviruses is supported only on Windows XP SP2+, Windows Vista and Windows 7 (and is not supported on server systems). Please consult our FAQ (link). The antivirus should be supported by Windows Security Center (or Action Center in Windows 7) to be detected.
    What is your OS version? Is your antivirus displayed in the Security Center?

  2. You're right, Microsoft has changed the namespace for security products (antiviruses, firewalls, antispyware) to report their information to the operating system and other software (including ours) in Windows Vista/7. The old namespace included fields like company name and version number which are not available in the new namespace anymore, so there is no place for us to get this information. The only way is if an antivirus includes its version with its name (though it's usually no version at all or just major version there).

    I know the current version of TNI doesn't report the Symantec EndPoint Protection correctly under Windows 7. This topic was brought up to me and I thought I'd ask that since it appears the next version of TNI is a way off from being released, if there's any possibility that the current version can be updated to properly report the status of SEP under the Windows 7 operating system?

    This was true for TNI 1.6.7, but it should not be the case with TNI 1.6.8. We have added direct support for detection of antiviruses under Vista SP1+ and Windows 7. If you already have a computer with Windows 7 and SEP installed, scan it with the current (1.6.8) version. Make sure that the "Client version" in the "General information" lists "1.6.8.2800" for this computer.

    Also, I had a question about the "Windows 7 Ready" item in the custom report and what hardware minimums the program is using to base the "Yes" or "No" answer on. Can you tell me what TNI uses for the hardware requirements to report on this? Also, is there anyway we can specify our own requirements for TNI to use to base its' answer to this on?

    TNI uses official Microsoft minimal requirements for CPU, RAM and HDD available here. (DirectX 9 graphics device is not checked). Unfortunately it's not possible to change the requirements. In the next version it will be possible to add your own filters for different values.

    As a side note, we're upgrading from Office XP to Office 2010 as part of this. If I recall, TNI doesn't report the product key for Office 2010. This isn't such a big deal for us since we are using the "KMS Licensing" model for licensing our Office 2010. I guess I'm just curious how the next version of TNI will report the licensing or product key for Office 2010 when you are using a KMS license server, and don't actually have a product key code entered in.

    TNI cannot report KMS or MAK keys, and I'm not sure about when (and if) it will be able to. The next version will provide a possibility to enter license keys manually. However if Office 2010 was activated in a regular way, TNI should collect the license key, though I have not checked this myself yet.

  4. Currently license keys which are collected by the program (Windows and Office) can be seen in "Detailed reports - Installed software", but they are not listed in "Software reports - Software and licenses". Anyway, in the next version the software accounting will be totally revised and it will do what you ask about. Besides, we plan to increase the number of products that the program can collect license keys for, and also it will be possible to enter the license keys manually.

  5. It is a limitation of the current program's version: it cannot include SNMP-devices to any report, but only can show some basic information retrieved from them in general view mode. This limitation will be removed in the next version of the program.

    As to the unqueried objects, you can get this list on the Scan Wizard's last page, before you click "Finish". You can sort the scan process table by the "Status" column (click on its header) and then use right-click menu to copy or export this data to a CSV file (to get the data into a spreadsheet application). You will have the list actually grouped by the error messages (including successfully scanned - "Scan OK" message). In the next version of the program this will also be improved - such objects will be added to the network tree and alerts will be displayed for each of them showing a scan error.

  6. This error is produced by WMI service (Windows Management Instrumentation) which is used by our program to collect hardware and software information. Here are two possible solutions:

    1. Try to fix WMI on each computer.

    Of course you should try this first on one PC only and see if it fixes the issue.

    2. Try to exclude the information category causing this error from the scan. Choose one computer that shows this error and which you can scan multiple times. Open "File - Options - Inventory" and deselect scan categories one by one, and repeat the scan of this computer after each deselection until this issue disappears. (Hint: deselect "General information" at once, because it may require scanning of certain classes despite of the appropriate category deselection). After this you can select all categories except this one and scan the rest of computers.

  7. Yes, it is not hard to add more fields to the detailed installed software report. It is just harder to do this when we are working on the new version all the time. Besides, we wouldn't like to release an update because of one added field (unfortunately detailed reports are not customizable in this version).

    As for the custom report, it's not possible to add installed software there in the current version (one row for each PC is the limit there).

    It's possible that there will be an update to the current version soon. The version 2.0 is planned to be released this summer.

  8. Thanks for the feedback.

    Unfortunately it's not possible to add any fields to the detailed "Installed software" report (it is fixed). And also it's not possible to add "Installed software" to the custom report where you can have user name, because in this report each computer occupies only one line (row), and it's not possible to put all installed software into one table cell (one row and one column). I think it will be possible to do this in the version 2.0 of the program.

  9. The program detects laptops by the model of processor (mobile processor or not). Unfortunately we are not able to maintain a database of all existing laptop models. But even processor models update fairly quickly. If you could post the processor name (or maybe more than one) that the program shows for the laptop which is not detected as a laptop, we could include it in the next update. Meanwhile you can set the computer type manually (right click - Set type).

    As for the second question, I understand you concern, but unfortunately I don't have any updates at this moment. The work is still in process.

  10. Thank you, Hemo2, your reply is correct. TNI lists software as it is listed in "Add or remove programs" in Control Panel. So if it's full Office package with only Word installed, it will not be able to show "Word". Only if it's a separate product which registers itself in the installed software list appropriately. I think we will work on this to add such possibility in the future versions.

  11. Probably yes, but I can't say for sure now. We are planning a new version which will use SQL database as a backend, it will be possible there. But these are long term plans (not in version 2.0). But after the release of version 2.0 we will see if it's possible to make a custom interface for our custom database.

  12. You're right, less space as well - about 30 KB per file (per snapshot). Yes, they will be individual files. However they will not be stored in one directory as earlier. Directories (folders) will be nested and they will represent the group structure that you create in the program. So files will be kept in the folders which correspond to specific groups. This will allow to create/modify the group structure outsite the program (using any file manager). Basically you will need to specify the same folder for backup and make sure that your backup application processes all files and folders recursively in this directory.

  13. This updated .exe contains some improvements that were requested by users during past 1-2 months:

    • computer type field in custom reports;
    • monitor manufacture date in custom reports;
    • Windows and Office supply channel in custom reports and general view;
    • domain accounts used for logon displayed in "User accounts";
    • detailed tabular report for user accounts.

    As for the next version, we have very much to do in it, that's why ETA is moving. Of course it is still in active development and will be released soon.

    I'm not authorized to post any screenshots yet, but I can say that it will feature:

    • new convenient interface;
    • new storage system with constant monitoring of changes and multiple users support;
    • updated scan wizard with AD OU browser and customizable IP ranges/subnets scanner;
    • tracking of changes in assets configuration (hardware and software), snapshots support;
    • more flexible reporting, more possibilities to customize the output.
