  1. I could see how trying to enumerate all the groups that all the individual User accounts are in could be process intensive. Maybe you could look at just showing the members of the local groups. That, at least, wouldn't cause the queries to AD that the other method would. Thank you for your quick response.
  2. I was trying to run a report that gave me the local and domain user accounts on PC's along with their respective privileges. The User Accounts report does seem to have that information, but it doesn't seem accurate. I specifically selected two computers where I knew that the domain accounts were in the local administrative group. However, the accounts were just listed as User and not Administrator. The local administrator account and all Domain Admin accounts were listed correctly as Administrator. Am I just thinking that the Privileges column works differently than it does or is there another way of getting the information I am looking for? Thanks for any input you might have.
  3. That worked. Thanks for the help.
  4. I have noticed that when you are in Software Accounting, and create a report, when you right-click and select one of the options to show comptuers that have (or don't have) a particular piece of software installed, if the list of compueters is long the window that displays the information can be large than the screen size. This means the buttons to close this window are not accessable. The only way I could figure out how to close it was to kill the program from Task Manager. Any ideas other than just killing the program?
  5. Yes, if the latest version (2750) was installed, after a removal of the program, when I selected the original data folder I would get the same error. The same issue would happen if I installed the prior version (2680) and then selected the original data folder. I 'fixed' the issue by installing version 2750 and just manually rescanning the domains. I will get the old Data folder zipped and emailed as soon as I can. Thanks again for your help. Jason
  6. Sorry, I got the build numbers switched around when I wrote the post. I updated to 2750 from 2680 and that is where I ran into the issue.
  7. I updated to the latest release (1.6.7 build 2680) you gave me that updated the Software installation counts. Now, whenever I start the program I get the following error: Access violation at address 007AB7C8 in module 'tni.exe'. Read of address 00000008. Then when I close TNI, I get a window that says, 'Range check error." I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software. I still get the error even when I run the original version (1.6.7 build 2750) I had. Only by removing the C:\Program Files\Total Network Inventory folder was I able to make the error go away. The problem did not return after I ran the update either. The only items left in that folder after an uninstall are the event.log file, the config.ini file, and the Data folder containing the groups and software .DAT files. I could get the error to return by changing where the Audit Agent and Storage folders are located. Once I point them back to where my .XML data was being stored, the error returned. So this looks like something in that data is not meshing with any versions I have. I am getting no errors in the event log, but this could be because the program itself does not crash. But it is unusable due to the errors. Any suggestions? Jason
  8. Basically it boiled down to the fact that both the full version of SQL 2005 and the free Express edition have the same name in Add/Remove Programs. However, the management studio portion of the software did show up as the Express edition if it was installed. I can see where it would be difficult to differentiate between the two if they had the same name. It is updated and I am recalculating the installations now. Thank you for helping out. I am going to see if there is something I could change on our end to help with this too.
  9. Answers to your questions via email: I checked the Add/Remove Programs for two servers, one showing SQL Server 2005 and the other showing SQL Server 2005 Express in TNI. Both showed SQL Server 2005 in the Add/Remove Programs. I then checked a server that I know has the full version of SQL 2005. It showed the same entry in the Add/Remove Programs. The only reference to the Express edition in there was the Management Studio. I checked the ..\Uninstall registry key for the SQL install. It was the same in both version of SQL. (This is not looking promising) =) For the servers showing up with the name in brackets, I found a registry key that holds a MULTI_SZ value called InstalledInstances. This seems to be where it is getting the name from. On the servers not showing this name in brackets, this value is still filled in, but they seem to be more default names like SQLSERVER. But they are all different from machine to machine. We are using version 1.6.7 (build 2580). Also, I checked into the Exchange settings and even when you only install the Exchange tools, the Add/Remove Programs shows that MS Exchange is installed. This would explain the miscalculation. I don't doubt that this issue seems to be related to how Microsoft handles their install process, but it still makes the reporting feature incorrect. And since we were trying to use this specifically for Microsoft licensing, this is a major problem.
  10. I started looking close at the software installation counts since our Microsoft licensing is coming up. I noticed several issues with what TNI was returning as a total installation count. I will list the two major ones first to see if anyone can come up with a solution. Microsoft Exchange: TNI is showing an Exchange installation even when it is only the tools that are installed. Is there a reason it can't tell the difference between the tools and the full installation? SQL: There were a few issues here. One, on a 64-bit Windows install, TNI is only reporting that the online Books portion is installed. This is not the case as the full version of 2005 is installed, but under the "Program Files" directory and not the "Program Files (x86)" directory. Two, TNI is showing that the full version of SQL 2005 is installed when it is the Express edition that is installed. We also get separate listings for both versions of SQL that _seem_ to be related to a database name. The name shows up as "Microsoft SQL Sever 2005 (SQLEXPRESS)", and not under another listing of "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition". Between the full install of SQL 2005 and the Express edition, I have 9 listings of separate named installations. Also, the two 64-bit installations don't show up at all. I can get into other similar issues if this isn't enough information. Thanks in advance for any help I can get. Jason
  11. Thanks for the update. I think for now I will just create a script that deletes out the XML files once they reach 60 days since the last modification date.
  12. Is there any way, short of deleteing the .XML files, to get rid of computers that are no longer active on the network? Maybe something that removes them if they don't check in for more than 60 days. As we go through and replace some of our older computers, the old ones are still showing up in the computer list. This throws off the software installation count. Currently this isn't a huge problem, but over time this would really throw off the numbers.
