clemens Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Have a notebook here with vista and the serial number for the drive isn't showing up, its blank. They are sata drives. Should this work with sata? This is a newer HP pc made just last year. Quote
Support Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Who is the manufacturer of this drive? (it usually can be understood from the product ID, post it fully if you are in doubt). We have noticed that WMI cannot get WD's SATA drives numbers, while other manufacturer's SATA drives do show their numbers. Quote
clemens Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 I tried a competing product and it didn't get the serial number either, if that helps you. Quote
clemens Posted July 4, 2008 Author Report Posted July 4, 2008 Today I tried a different product and it did work. I don't know why. Quote
Support Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 Obviously the tool which didn't get the number uses WMI too, like our product. And other one which did, doesn't use it. Quote
clemens Posted July 5, 2008 Author Report Posted July 5, 2008 Sounds like a bug in WMI that micro$oft needs to fix. The one that worked was Everest, but it mainly works with one computer at a time. Its not really the same software as yours Quote
Support Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I agree. Some software like Everest uses direct hardware access (by querying driver or something like that), others rely on WMI. It seems that even Vista doesn't have too many improvements in this area... Quote
