Currently I am trying to create a script that will open the application and run the scan. This script can then be scheduled using the built in scheduler. Not sure if I am barking up the wrong tree though.

No, as I have already mentioned, it is not possible to implement scheduling in 1.6.x (which includes 1.6.8). The new version where it will be possible is still in development.
